Dandeli is a small timber town with an outsized river. Dam-released flows on the Kali mean raftable rapids most of the year — a rarity in the south — and the surrounding Anshi-Dandeli forests hold hornbills, crocodiles and black panthers that occasionally deign to be seen.
It is an unpolished, honest adventure town: river in the morning, forest in the afternoon, campfire smoke by dark.
When to go
October to June for rafting (dam releases most mornings); monsoon swells the river beyond play.
Getting there
Overnight bus from Bengaluru (~9 hours) or train to Alnavar/Londa; Hubballi airport is 75 km.
