Gokarna is what beach towns were before beach towns became brands: a working pilgrimage village, a handful of cliff-backed coves, and an unhurried economy of shacks and fishing boats.
The beaches south of town — Kudle, Om, Half Moon, Paradise — are connected by a cliff path that is one of the finest short coastal walks in the country.
When to go
November to February: dry, warm, swimmable. The monsoon closes the cliff paths and most shacks.
Getting there
Overnight bus or train from Bengaluru (Gokarna Road station, 10 km out); Goa's airports are 2–4 hours north.

Fish thalis at the fishing-harbour end of town, shack breakfasts on Kudle, and buns with coconut chutney at the old cafés near the temple.

Swim where the flags are. The undertow between Om and Half Moon is stronger than it looks.
